The millipede P. laminata (Diplopoda: Polydesmida: Xystodesmidae) is the most abundant
macro-fauna species in Japanese larch plantation forests. This species has a 8 years cycle
with spectacular swarming of the adults and subadults provoking periodic traffic disturbances.
P. laminata incorporates litter to soil and produces stable faecal pellets and stable moulting
chambers: it is an ecosystem engineer of these Andosols.
Faeces of subadults P. laminata were produced in laboratory conditions from 2 mm sieved
fresh surface soil. Twenty g of fresh faeces were incubated in triplicate at 15°C in the dark for 4
weeks. The soil fed to the millipedes was used as control. The passage of soil through the gut
caused an increase in soil microbial respiration, N mineralization and N2O emissions of about
2.3 times, 4 times and 33%, respectively. Protease activity and microbial diversity (measured
by the physiological fingerprinting phospholipid fatty acids method: PLFA) were also significantly
increased in the faeces. Consequently these casts are a hot spot of soil microbial diversity and
a meaningful source of available nitrogen for plants. |
